This portfolio was completed for AP Studio Art: 2-D Design for the 2019-20 school year.
The following is the artist’s statement regarding the works as submitted.
My guiding questions are “What are my relationships with my family members and how have they shaped/continue to shape who I am?” and also “What defines the concept of memory and how can I convey it through artistic media?”. My first idea for the concept of memory involved layers which led me to encaustic. Image 1 is my first attempt and I experimented with drawing a childhood experience with my dad from memory. I used yarn as an alternative drawing material. I experimented with sgraffito in the top left corner to uncover work in lower layers. I revised these ideas in image 9. I revised the sgraffito to uncover fabric in lower layers and added found objects on top of it to explore layering in a new way. I practiced drawing from memory and focused on my relationship with my mom, incorporating many memories instead of one. I experimented with encaustic by embedding found objects in the wax and continuing to draw with yarn. All other pieces practice, experiment, and revise ideas from the first two pieces. In image 2 I practiced with found objects and narrowed it down to only one (rocks). I practiced drawing from memory but experimented by focusing on fragments of memories instead of a whole scene.
